Where We Grow continued...
Where we put new development affects traffic, health, economic prosperity and the environment. New homes built in outer areas without shopping and jobs make several problems worse:
- Long, arduous commutes.
- Less time with family.
- Shrinking forests and fields.
- Too much spent on gas.
- Fewer resources available for housing costs.
Our region is growing fast. That means we have plenty of chances to accommodate new residents in better ways than we have before. We can put new developments in the right places:
- Near transit (Transit-Oriented Development)
- On under-used urban lots (Infill)
- Along existing commercial corridors
- Through graceful expansions of small towns
Then, we can drive less and have great places to live, play and work. Choosing locations wisely is crucial for growing into a better region.
