The Coalition for Smarter Growth commends Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley's decision, announced this morning, to move the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development near the New Carrollton Metro station in Prince George's County.

"We commend Governor O'Malley and County Executive Baker for following through on their commitment to transit-oriented development. Moving the state housing agency headquarters here not only focuses jobs at a transit hub, but will also offer a mix of retail, offices and housing - something lacking in New Carrollton now. This mixed-use project sets a great example for the kind of development we want to see at all our Metro stations. We look forward to more announcements about state and local partnerships for transit-oriented development. We hope the next one will be about the greatly anticipated medical center. A Metro station would be an ideal location for a major regional hospital facility," said Cheryl Cort, Policy Director of the Coalition for Smarter Growth.

The Coalition for Smarter Growth has campaigned for several years to boost investment around the Prince George's County Metro stations. The organization's campaign for transit-oriented development in the county has included the following: releasing multiple reports, including the interactive online feature Invest Prince George's, holding a series of events focused on transit-oriented development in Prince George's County, and working with community members and decision-makers.
