In advance of the event,Chairman Sharon Bulova stated:

“I am pleased that the Coalition for Smarter Growth is bringing together a diverse set of stakeholders who share a commitment to a sustainable and competitive future for Fairfax County.  The county is moving forward with its historic Tysons Corner plan and Dulles Rail, focusing on the revitalization of our commercial centers,  creating diverse housing options, and investing in the transit, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure needed to support vibrant, livable communities.”

Stewart Schwartz, Executive Director of the Coalition for Smarter Growth:

“Our goal is to bring together all sectors to help the county maintain the momentum for revitalization and redesign of Fairfax’s commercial corridors – the best places to absorb coming population growth in a sustainable way.  By creating walkable, mixed-use, transit-oriented communities, Fairfax enhances its competiveness, attracting the young “creative class” and downsizing empty nesters and retirees, while also linking housing options to affordable transportation for its workforce.”

Background

After seven long years, the plan for a sustainable redesign of Tysons Corner finally passed. This is truly a historic moment for Fairfax County and the Washington region, as we begin the bold effort to transform this traffic-choked “edge city” into a walkable, mixed-use, sustainable community focused around Metro stations.

Now it’s time we think about where and how the rest of Fairfax County should grow. Nearly 250,000 new people will move to Fairfax County in the next 30 years. Where will they live? How will they get around? And what will it mean for our communities?
