Kentlands is one of the earliest neo-traditional neighborhoods in the United States, and has become a successful, internationally recognized smart growth community. Its popularity prompts better home resale values than surrounding suburban neighborhoods. The development is known for strong community involvement. In the late 1990s, the local organization Citizens Alliance for Planning Excellence successfully campaigned against Wal-Mart's plans to build a complex in their neighborhood.
