Car sharing has been catching on, coming to the Washington, D.C. metro region courtesy of ZipCar and Flexcar. Recently merged under the ZipCar name this company is at the core of smart growth and transportation solutions: people move to walkable communities in part because they know they have varied and convenient transportation options. A 2004 study of a car sharing program in Arlington, Virginia, showed that 68% of the participants postponed buying a car and 70% saved money on transportation.
