The City of Alexandria, VA ensures no net loss of its public housing stock through its Resolution 830, which mandates a full one-to-one replacement of any redeveloped units on Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority properties. The City also created an affordable housing trust fund to leverage financing investment for private sector and nonprofit housing creation and preservation.

As well, the City Council-designated Affordable Housing Initiatives working group is preparing a series of policy recommendations to address housing preservation, rehabilitation, construction and additional resources to ensure that Alexandria residents of all income levels have access to the many opportunities offered across the city. The working group's preliminary report is here.
Affordable housing is one important policy issue being addressed in two additional planning processes: Landmark/Van Dorn and Potomac Yard.
The Coalition for Smarter Growth also works with its regional partner, the Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance (NVAHA) on housing issues in Alexandria.
