Fairfax County dedicates one penny of its annual real estate tax rate to affordable housing preservation; it has adopted a high-rise ordinance to ensure that at least 12% of all units in buildings above 8 stories will be committed as affordable to a mix of workforce housing incomes.

The Tyson’s Corner Land Use Task Force incorporated specific affordable housing recommendations in its final recommendations.
The Coalition for Smarter Growth also works with its regional partner, the Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance (NVAHA) on housing issues in Fairfax County.
NVAHA is a broad-based regional organization dedicated to the creation of successful communities through affordable housing education and advocacy. The Alliance promotes the development and preservation of housing for people of all incomes through information exchange, policy monitoring, public outreach and education. Partner organizations represent nonprofit housing developers, shelter and service providers, housing and homeless coalitions, financial institutions, faith communities and other concerned groups and individuals.
