From 2000 to 2004, Loudoun County grew by forty-one percent, and one in four new Washington Metro Area residents moved to Loudoun. At this rate, growth in Loudoun has accounted for approximately 25% of Virginia's total growth and 20% of the Washington region's growth.
Loudoun County has been a desirable place to live due to its mix of suburban communities, rural farmland and rich history. But for the past several years, national developers have targeted Loudoun with proposals for massive increases in residential development beyond what the roads, schools and other community services can handle. Ignoring the 2001 Comprehensive Plan, developers and the County Board of Supervisors tried to add tens of thousands more houses to the more than 30,000 already in the pipeline.
In recent elections, residents voted for a new, smart growth Board, creating the chance to focus on the services needed for existing communities and to involve the community in creating walkable street networks that help reduce traffic. The Campaign for Loudoun's Future has worked to save Loudoun County from fast- paced overdevelopment.
