The Coalition for Smarter Growth (CSG) is the leading smart growth organization in the Washington, DC region. High energy costs, climate change, traffic and environmental issues, make smarter growth more important than ever. We address the Washington, DC region’s key issues of where and how to grow. Our mission is to ensure that transportation and development decisions are made with genuine community participation and allow the region to accommodate growth while revitalizing communities, providing more housing and travel choices, and conserving our natural and historic areas. The Coalition was founded as and remains the central coordinating agent and voice of smart growth in Metropolitan Washington.
Role Description
Informed, engaged community leaders are the key to ensuring appropriate growth plans and the policies, design and funding necessary to deliver housing and transportation choices. The Coalition for Smarter Growth has long believed in the value of engaged residents, but identifying, cultivating and maintaining that constituency takes diligence, talent and time. Our Ward 3 campaign is a prime example. There was incredible latent support and interest, but it had not been mobilized. It took the talent, time and organization of the Coalition’s staff to identify, cultivate and engage those people. This position will increase the Coalition’s capacity to identify supporters and engage them in our local and regional campaigns. Using both traditional and electronic outreach and communication methods, your role will be to identify, educate and mobilize new supporters for the Coalition’s various campaigns.
Responsibilities will include:
Grassroots Outreach and Organizing (60%)
Serving as the Coalition’s primary person identifying new members, volunteers and activists. This work includes managing the Ward 3 campaign in Washington, DC, as well as campaigns in other parts of the region, and will include both traditional and online organizing activities.
- Expand Ward 3 campaign supporter list, working with and managing the steering committee. Identify and cultivate new leadership for the group.
- Generate interest and identify volunteers for DC Ward 3 campaign activities, including library and the redesign of Wisconsin Avenue.
- Outreach to support smart growth policy work throughout the region, particularly in Ward 7, Tysons Corner/Fairfax, Loudoun and Montgomery County.
- Use your knowledge and creativity to maximize online organizing tools for the Coalition
- Attend Community meetings and hearings
- Build relationships with community members
- Develop materials needed for outreach and campaign work
Website Manager (30%)
Serving as the content manager for the Coalition’s website. This will include working with all staff to create content and ensure the sites are up to date and using new tools to evaluate the success of our electronic communication. It will also entail working with the Campaigns Manager to ensure we are strategically taking advantage of the new software capacities and marketing information well to our target audiences.
- Maintain and managing the content and campaign updates for the main CSG website
- Craft and send out action alerts and campaign updates
- Explore and implement new online media strategies to improve our marketing and to better engage new and existing members in local and regional campaigns
- Collaborate on the development and implementation of the Coalition’s communications strategy.
Materials Development (5%)
Assist with the graphic design of flyers, brochures, postcards, etc. as needed for various campaigns and activities. Depending on skills, talent, and/or interest, we are open to assistance in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to graphic design and web enhancement (including HTML, Flash, etc.)
General Coalition Tasks (5%)
- Participate in fundraising, including planning for related events
- Assist on other campaigns and CSG goals as necessary
Qualifications
- Experience in and passion for community organizing, issue advocacy or political campaigns, or have similar outreach and relationship building skills;
- Strong interest in neighborhood and community issues;
- Talent for working with multiple colleagues in a variety of contexts to create thriving, collaborative and effective partnerships;
- Experience with Internet outreach, websites and marketing;
- Knowledge of and experience with HTML, Dreamweaver and other web-related software;
- Strong communication skills, including writing and public speaking;
- Ability to juggle multiple projects and issues at once;
- Ability to balance immediate and long term needs;
- Excellent interpersonal skills, an ability to work independently and as part of a larger team, a sense of humor and availability to work some weekends and evenings.
We are interested in filling this position as soon as possible. Salary range is low $30’s, depending on experience. Coalition for Smarter Growth provides a generous and flexible benefits package.
