It will take the active involvement of the community for D.C. to remain a national leader in the rebirth of sustainable and inclusive cities. In partnership with Greater Greater Washington, we’re organizing pro-smart growth residents around our Pro-DC initiative. This team of engaged community members is focused on supporting progressive policies in the D.C. Zoning Update, transit-oriented development, better transportation choices, and more affordable housing.
The Washington D.C. zoning code has not been comprehensively updated since 1958, a time when cities were built to accommodate cars and gas cost $0.24 per gallon. The code is older than 78 percent of the District’s population and places little emphasis on historic preservation or sustainability. Simply put, it does not befit a modern, dynamic city like D.C.
That’s why the D.C. Office of Planning is leading a multi-year public effort to review and revise the code. CSG is committed to helping make sure the updated code encourages transit, walking and bicycling-friendly streets, diverse and affordable housing choices, and good urban design.

Our work on affordable housing in the District focuses on Inclusionary Zoning (including affordable units in new development), public land redevelopment, and other policies that help keep D.C. an inclusive city.
