Presentation: Urban Design Essentials
Michael Foster, MTFA Architects
Please note: This presentation was given with an oral narrative that explained the significance of the slides. Several of the slides require explanation to tie them to the discussion or to the lesson being drawn. Be aware of this as you look through the presentation. Major themes in Mr. Foster’s presentation included the importance of:
- Civic buildings woven into the urban environment.
- Creative thinking needed to build environments inviting to people, and public involvement in the process.
- Weaving cultural activities and structures into the fabric of urban space.
- The trade-offs required when eliminating surface parking lots in favor of vibrant, active spaces. Certain densities are needed when replacing surface parking -- to pay for structured parking, inclusion of affordable housing, and the setting aside of public spaces, to name just a few of the potential community benefits.
- The necessity of sufficient density to generate the most vibrant environments.
- The creativity necessary to link elevated transit to people-focused environments.
- Incorporating green building into new development.
