Roadways Dangerous and Unsafe for Walkers

Over the past several decades we have seen a tremendous increase in the amount and size of cars and roads in our communities. With these increases, we have also seen an increase in the amount of car-related injuries and deaths. In fact, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for people ages 1 to 33. Although there are many factors to consider in this scenario (pedestrian and bicycle safety, vehicular safety, etc.), community design plays a major role in the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike.

Community Design

We live in an increasingly auto-oriented society that is characterized by massive multi-lane roadways and areas that are only navigable by car. Cross walks, sidewalks, and bicycle lanes are often completely absent from these highly trafficked areas, making walking and bike riding extremely dangerous.

In many cases, people may live short distances from commercial areas, schools, or work, but are unable to walk or bike to those areas because of the road design, so they are forced to drive. This, in turn, puts more cars on the road, which increases traffic for everyone.
