History of Sprawl and Health
It is common for older generations to have more memories of walking to and from places (school, work, etc.), than younger generations do. This is because development that has taken place over the past several decades has been spread out, auto-oriented sprawl that relies on vehicles. Although this form of development impacts many aspects of our lives and well being, it has been difficult to gauge the effect auto-oriented development has had upon certain aspects of our lives, including our physical and mental health, until recently. After years of observation and study, recent reports have pointed to the connection between sprawl and health, both mental and physical. Through such reports and media attention, the public is gaining a new consciousness of this important social issue.
