Walking and Biking
Walking and biking are modes
of transportation that benefit individuals, the community, and the environment.
They increase physical activity which improves health,
are pollution free which improves air and water
quality, and promote human interaction which strengthens communities. In order
to encourage pedestrian and bicycle activity, we need to design our streets and
communities to be pedestrian and bike friendly. Such designs
are not found in sprawling communities but are key components of smart
growth. Bike and pedestrian facilities are often under funded by state departments of transportation despite the high percentage of traffic fatalities that are pedestrians. Some states have started Safe Routes to School & Safe Routes to Transit programs to dedicate funding to safe walking routes for kids to school and for everyone to transit stations. As Arlington has shown, if you provide a safe and convenient way to walk to transit, people will use it. 70% of Metro riders on the Orange line in Arlington walk to the station. The Council of Governments (COG) sponsored Walkable Communities audits in the spring of 2004 with local jurisdictions to identify problem areas and opportunities.
