Smart
Growth development provides alternatives to expensive and ineffiecient road
building projects such as the Techway. These alternatives include creating a balance
of jobs and housing and increasing transit:
1. Creating
A Balance of Jobs and Housing:
A balanced land use scenario (BLU)
is an effort to place jobs closer to housing that is affordable, to balance these
both with recreation and services and to connect them all by transit. Preliminary
studies in Montgomery County have shown that balancing land use and transportation
and placing jobs closer to housing provides significant congestion relief throughout
the region.
2. Increasing Transit:
More money should be spent to
improve and expand public transportation throughout the region. Transit
alternatives must be studied as part of a comprehensive solution to relieving
traffic. Transit provides choices for residents and commuters and also connects
different parts of the region. Specific transit projects that should be supported
include: rail to Tyson's
Corner, increased bus service, the Inner
Purple Line Commuter Rail and the Corridor Cities Transitway.
