| Update: |
| In
April 2003, Governors Warner and Ehrlich announced a new study for a Potomac River
crossing between Maryland and Virginia. Since then, an origin and destination
study was conducted by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) which
did not demonstrate a need for a new bridge. |
The proposed "Techway" would be a bridge across the Potomac
River that would connect the technology corridor around Dulles Airport
to the I-270 technology corridor. This bridge would be one segment of
the Outer Beltway between the Intercounty
Connector in Maryland and the Tri-County
Parkway (Route 28) or the Western
Transportation Corridor in Virginia. If the "Techway"
were completed, the new crossing would increase development in the rural
areas of Western Montgomery County (MD) and Loudoun County (VA). Because
of what is called induced travel,
the "Techway" would not provide traffic relief. There are
viable alternatives to building the "Techway"
that would manage growth in the region and provide convenient transportation
choices to residents and commuters.
