Traffic Calming
What's Traffic
Calming?
Initiated in Europe 30 years ago, traffic calming employs various methods
and designs to slow traffic, thereby increasing safety through residential
areas
Examples
Traffic Calming methods include raised intersections, differing pavement
textures, shifts in direction, grassy road shoulders, narrowed travel
ways, "street trees," roundabouts, medians
Why It's Good
The key to traffic calming is that it is self-enforced, with drivers slowing
themselves down to deal with different obstacles. It is an easy, relatively
low cost way to increase safety on the roads
