Project Expense:

Who will pay?

The Federal Transit Administration, the Commonwealth of Virginia, Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority would provide funding for the design and construction of the Dulles Corridor Rapid Transit Project. There is also the possibility of private funding for portions of the project through the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Public Private Transportation Act of 1995 (PPTA).

How much will it cost?

Capital cost estimates for each of the four Build Alternatives were developed on the basis of the General Plans for the project. Estimated costs for the BRT Alternative range from $342.7 million to $481.4 million, depending on the alignment option. Estimated costs for the Metrorail Alternative range from $2,937.3 million to $3,101.3 million, depending on the Tysons Corner alignment option. Estimated costs for the BRT/Metrorail Alternative range from $1,303.1 million to $1,454.1 million. The estimated cost for the Phased Implementation Alternative is $3,295.4 million. These costs include escalation but not the cost of financing.
