Dulles Corridor
Projects to get transit to Tyson's Corner and Dulles have potential to be great projects, if they are approached in a smart way with an emphasis on land use. This includes transit oriented, mixed use development within a ¼ and ½ mile of the transit stations in high quality, new urbanist designed communities. Because Tyson's and the Dulles Corridor are major regional job centers, changes in land use and an increase in transit access could significantly reduce traffic congestion on the Beltway, the Dulles Toll Road, and local roads. Successful transit projects in this region should also includes connecting from the Orange line to Tyson's Corner and creating the right mix of uses, including affordable housing, and good pedestrian-oriented design. Transit to Dulles combined with the Purple Line could also reduce calls for a Techway bridge on the Potomac. In order for transit in the region to be smart, it needs to connect to community centers with pedestrian and bike access to every station, and there must be Transit Oriented Development at those stations. In addition, developing mixed use areas, whereby jobs and housing are placed at the stations, is key because it will guarantee ridership. More on Dulles Corridor: Related Issues: More Information:
