Woodrow
Wilson Bridge Expansion
| Update: |
| Opportunities
still exist to secure space for transit at the Wilson Bridge. Maryland's
Purple Line Rail Study is underway,
and lays the groundwork for rail at the Wilson Bridge. |
Regional leaders are building a $2.5 billion (and rising) 12-lane Woodrow
Wilson drawbridge and conducting a study on widening the Beltway from
8 to 12-lanes to decrease traffic. Although these plans are aimed to
improve traffic in the area, the fact that the plans do not include
transit means they will not provide traffic relief. Both the bridge
and Beltway widening are exacting a toll on neighborhoods, taxpayers,
and on hundreds of homes. In the end, neither will solve traffic congestion
because widening roads creates more traffic.
Construction of the new Woodrow
Wilson Bridge provides an opportunity to secure space for transit on
the Bridge. If we don't plan space for transit now, we'll be paying
for it in future years.
