  • 15,000 People Urge "Don't double the size of Loudoun County!"
The Campaign for Loudoun's Future presented the County Board of Supervisors with 13,674 petition signatures gathered on election day from Loudoun voters who oppose proposals by developers to double the size of the County. An additional 1,356 signatures have been gathered online or in person, with more people still signing. Sign the petition at www.loudounsfuture.org.

In response to the developer proposals to add nearly 40,000 housing in eastern Loudoun and the recent court ruling that invalidated the rural zoning in Western Loudoun that was put in place in 2003 after years of public discussion, residents across the county upset that their elected officials aren't doing more to better manage growth.

At recent meetings, residents from across Loudoun have testified that they are worried about meeting the needs for ballfields, roads and other amenities in current communities and communities already approved but not built.  "I live in Sugarland Run and I signed the petition because I am concerned about the quality of my family's life," said Mike Keeney. "It's easy to look at the map of the proposed development and see that those of us in eastern Loudoun are between all of those new houses most jobs. Where are we going to put all the traffic? Double deck Route 7 and Route 50?

One resident even put her concerns to song, Stand by Our Plan, to the tune of Tammy Wynette's classic Stand By Your Man. Listen Here.

  • Regional visioning process is a win for transit and open space
On February 2, 2005, 300 elected officials and community, environmental, development and business leaders from more than 20 jurisdictions throughout the region participated in a unique one-day exercise to discuss how the region will absorb another 2 million people and 1.6 million jobs over the next 25 years. Participants strongly articulated the desire to create more affordable housing close-in, near job centers and to take more advantage of Metro by putting more housing and jobs close to the stations.

The sponsoring groups said the results of this work will set the groundwork for needed regional dialogue and future action to accommodate growth in a way that leverages resources, adds value to our communities, and protects our environment and quality of life. A summary of the results and more photos from the exercise are available at: www.smartergrowth.net.

  • Study rates ICC as worst option
A new study of the ICC and alternatives finds four practical, cost-effective options perform better than the Intercounty Connector (ICC) on most measures, including reducing traffic, air pollution and overall cost. The report was sponsored by the Coalition for Smarter Growth with other regional and national environmental, transportation and smart growth groups and conducted by Smart Mobility, Inc., a nationally recognized traffic modeling firm.

Not only did the alternative packages perform better than the ICC, the ICC performed the worst on almost every measure including time spent driving, delay due to congestion, total amount of driving or vehicle miles traveled, and the total number of trips made each day.

The full report and a summary can be viewed at www.smartergrowth.net.
