Radio Ads Increase Regional and Local Pressure on
Loudoun Board of Supervisors to Re-Enact Rural Zoning

Listen to the Radio Ads:  Ad #1    Ad #2

Ads on WTOP news radio started running today about the massive growth proposals in Loudoun County.

“Think traffic can’t get worse, think again,” the ad starts. “Loudoun officials could add a million cars to your commute. Join thousands of concerned residents at LoudounsFuture.org or 703-579-1970.”

LoudounsFuture.org is the web site for the Campaign for Loudoun’s Future, the effort that has mobilized thousands of Loudoun residents around developer proposals that could double the size of Loudoun County.

“The volume of growth being proposed by developers in Loudoun County has regional impacts,” said Laura Olsen, Assistant Director of the Coalition for Smarter Growth. “Our roads cannot handle the million more cars that doubling or tripling the size of Loudoun would put on our roads.”

The ads bring the issues that have been rousing massive action by Loudoun residents to a regional audience. Over 15,000 people have signed a petition asking Loudoun officials to oppose developers’ proposals to add 40,000 houses to central Loudoun. In addition, hundreds of residents have been turning out to the usually calm Board of Supervisors meetings to ask them to reinstate the rural zoning adopted in 2003 after three years of public debate. The rural zoning was invalidated just two weeks ago by the Virginia Supreme Court due to a technicality about the newspaper advertisement. It is estimated that the change could allow developers to build at least 50,000 houses in western Loudoun without having to provide any proffers for roads or services.

Olsen noted, “Loudoun residents are asking for sensible growth plans and a majority of their elected officials seem to be listening more to developers than citizens. Everyone in our region should be concerned about developers’ plans for Loudoun. Massive growth in Loudoun negatively impacts us all.”

In addition to hearing the ads on WTOP Radio, they are available in the press room on the Coalition for Smarter Growth’s website.
