Prince George's
County Solutions
Smart Growth development,
as advocated in the Blueprint for
a Better Region, can provide solutions to the traffic, pollution,
and economic challenges Prince George's County currently faces. Specific
measures include:
- Developing
at Prince George's 13 Metro Stations
Prince George's County's thirteen Metro stations are the key to its
economic well-being. Yet, not enough development is taking place at
these stations. Instead, much of the county is auto-oriented and focused
on its western and northern parts that have limited access to transit.
Instead of pouring money into expensive road projects that would increase
the imbalance of resources and jobs in Prince George's County, it would
be more wise to invest money in commercial and residential development
around the already existing and underutilized Metro stations. Such transit
oriented development would reduce traffic congestion and create
walkable communities that take advantage of existing infrastructure,
revitalize older, inner-beltway neighborhoods, protect our rural and
natural resources, and improve the economic outlook for the entire county.

- Managing Growth
through Reinvestment and Protection
Prince George's County has incredible
potential to be a model of smart growth in the region for years to come if we
reinvest in existing infrastructure in the county and stop Westward expansion
of the ICC that would bring money and resources further away from those who need
them. Managing growth properly would bring access to jobs and services to parts
of the county that desperately need it and would protect open space such as the
Rural Tier from destructive development. In addition, The County's Comprehensive
Plan divides the county into three growth tiers, which provides a balanced vision
of growth management.
