Update:

The Federal Transportation bill was adopted on July 29, 2005.
See more details about the policy and earmarks in the bill.

Decisions made at the national level can have significant impacts on the local level to do with how our communities grow and evolve.

Local issues are governed by national level legislations including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA). NEPA requires transportation authorities to conduct environmental impact studies and have public comments on transportation projects.

Local issues are also affected by the policies and funding in the federal transportation bill which is reauthorized every 6 years.  In addition, the federal government's decisions about where to site offices and other facilities have a major impact on communities, especially in the Washington area.
