Once rich in forests, farms and history, Prince William County's rapid and often poorly planned growth has created serious traffic and infrastructure problems. Residents have long supported protection of a Rural Crescent in the west and pushed for greater protection along the Potomac River shoreline and streams. For years, the Western Bypass and an eastern Potomac bridge crossing (parts of an Outer Beltway) have threatened to generate even more development.
Today, the Tri-County Parkway/Battlefield Bypass extending from Route 234 north are the latest names for the Western Bypass and threaten to open the Rural Crescent to development. Many residents continue to fight for better planning and conservation. The Prince William Conservation Alliance works to preserve the communities and natural resources of the county.
