D.C. – Homes for an Inclusive City

The Coalition for Smarter Growth prioritizes the production and preservation of affordable housing, especially with access to transportation choices and jobs, as one critical element of truly interconnected, sustainable communities.

BROAD DC COALITION CREATES STRATEGIC HOUSING POLICY
One of the most important local housing publications, this 2006 report is the final report of research, analysis and recommendations from the DC Comprehensive Housing Strategy Task Force. The task force was convened by then-Mayor Anthony Williams to form the blueprint for comprehensive affordable housing programs across the city.

COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH IDENTIFIES CLEAR GAPS, GOALS
The task force included leading members of the local and national housing community, representing business, nonprofit and local advocacy representatives. Their investigation of the success of DC housing programs in place at the time, and the depth of need of particular populations for affordable housing and support services, is well-documented and articulated in layman’s terms. It revealed much about the best practices and gaps in the city’s approach to housing policy.

ADOPTED BY CITY, ADVOCATES KEEP RECOMMENDATIONS ALIVE
The recommendations of the task force, which were adopted by the Mayor and City Council in 2006, have since served as the advocacy guidebook for the DC Affordable Housing Alliance. The Coalition is a major partner in the Alliance, and promotes the sound reasoning and pragmatic, resource-efficient recommendations in the report as a timeless, strategic approach for helping create and maintain safe, decent housing for DC residents in need, whatever their particular requirements.
