Dear Supporter,
For over 28 years, the Coalition for Smarter Growth has been dedicated to serving the D.C. region and its people. We have witnessed firsthand the growth and vibrancy of our city and region that comes from inclusive and diverse neighborhoods.
However, since last week, Washington D.C., the city we know and love, has faced a troubling intervention. The President has deployed federal forces, including the National Guard and ICE, onto our streets, and sought to take control of the Metropolitan Police Department. This has led to intimidation, detentions, and displacement, particularly affecting our most vulnerable neighbors, including people of color, immigrants, and those experiencing homelessness.
These policies have little to do with finding strategic and effective solutions to homelessness or crime. To the contrary, they will harm our most vulnerable residents and lead to an economic slowdown that will impact the entire region.
At the Coalition for Smarter Growth, we stand firmly by our principles of fostering inclusive, connected, and livable neighborhoods. Decades of our work have shown that keeping our region prosperous and vibrant requires:
- A strong, vibrant, and inclusive city as our regional core
- Commitment to public participation in governing
- Transparency and oversight for decision-makers and law enforcement
- Long-term investments in housing, transit, and amenities that connect people with economic opportunities and community resources.
Our region is strong and resilient, and we will stand together through this temporary takeover. However, it will require a collective commitment from all of us to stay engaged and look out for our neighbors. Whether it’s attending a community meeting, contacting your elected officials, or amplifying the voices of those most impacted, your involvement matters. By working together, we can thoughtfully address our local and regional challenges.
Vibrant communities are not run by fear and intimidation. They are built on trust, compassion, and connection. Solidarity and diversity are at the heart of what we do, and they are also at the heart of our region.
On behalf of our whole team — Cheryl, Sonya, Carrie, Bill, Angela, Elena, and Becca
