Arlington is seeking feedback on the newly released Guiding Principles and Supporting Statements of the county’s Comprehensive Plan, the latest development in the Arlington2050 initiative. As one of the most important tools for guiding land use priorities, this is your chance to have a say in the long-term growth of our Arlington community. Be sure to share your input by June 7!
How can we support smart growth in Arlington?
To ensure the most smart growth-oriented outcomes, we encourage you to answer “Very Comfortable” with items that focus on housing supply, public transportation, walkability, and sustainability. In particular:
- Livable and Thriving Arlington – 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4
- Inclusive Arlington – 2.4, 2.5, 2.6
- Sustainable and Environmentally Just Arlington – 3.1, 3.3, 3.6
- Healthy & Safe Arlington – 4.3, 4.6
- Regionally Collaborative Arlington – 6.2
In the box provided for additional feedback, please consider including the following priorities:
- Well-designed, walkable neighborhoods directly improve public health outcomes and social connectedness.
- The county should move away from low-density restrictions near major regional rail and bus lines and prioritize more housing options near high-capacity transit, as well as in commercial corridors served by frequent bus routes.
- By updating zoning laws and streamlining the entitlement process to allow a wider variety of housing options, we can ensure the county promotes long-term inclusivity. Expanding financial support for affordable housing tools is also essential.
- Promoting more transit and active transportation options, such as bicycling, is necessary to reduce carbon emissions and foster a more sustainable future for the county.
This is an exciting opportunity to have a voice in shaping Arlington’s future to promote equitable access to housing and transit – don’t forget to respond by June 7! For more information on updates to the county’s Comprehensive Plan, please visit the Arlington2050 website.
