All Things Montgomery: May 2026

Let’s kick off summer with some good news! Earlier this year, we asked you to take action once again for future housing at the Chevy Chase Library after County Executive Elrich’s draft budget called for renovation rather than redevelopment.

Thanks to our efforts along with our partners at AIM, all eleven Councilmembers voted to restore the budget language we first won in 2022 that calls for a new library as part of a mixed-use development.

The specifics of this future development—among many other key decisions!—will be determined by the next County Executive. Learn more about who’s running by attending the GOP County Exec candidate forum we’re co-hosting May 28th, watching the recording of our Dem County Exec forum, and checking out our questionnaire responses for both Council and Exec candidates!

Also, don’t miss upcoming chances to share feedback with planners on the Eastern Silver Spring Communities Plan and Friendship Heights Sector Plan. Read more in our upcoming events list below, and join us June 3rd for a bike ride through the ESSCP plan area!

🗣️ Events! Events! Events!

There’s no shortage of opportunities to learn more about local, county, and regional planning + zoning efforts in the next couple weeks! Check out each of these upcoming events:

GOP County Executive Candidate Forum: May 28 @ 7PM

On Thursday, May 28, we’re co-hosting another transportation-focused candidate forum with our partners at WABA, ACT, and MCCPTA.

Last month we heard from the Democratic primary candidates. Please join us next week to hear from Republican primary candidates for Montgomery County Executive about their positions on public transit, safe infrastructure for biking and walking, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, and more!

Single-Stair Multifamily + Walkable Neighborhoods w/ CSG, AIA, and CNU: June 2 @ 6PM

As we grapple with housing affordability, zoning reform, and the urgent need for more diverse housing options, single-stair multifamily housing has emerged as a key design and policy opportunity. Combining these innovations with walkable neighborhoods and great placemaking can help us create more sustainable, inclusive, and in-demand neighborhoods.

Join CSG, American Institute of Architects (AIA) DC, and Congress for New Urbanism (CNU) Mid-Atlantic to explore how smarter housing design can advance more walkable, inclusive, and resilient neighborhoods across our region.

Eastern Silver Spring Communities Plan Bike Tour: June 3 @ 5:30PM

Do you want to learn more about the Eastern Silver Spring Communities Plan (ESSCP) and have the opportunity to provide feedback directly to planners in person? Would you like to enjoy a group bike ride with pupusas for dinner at the end?

Join CSG and Montgomery for All for a group bike ride through the Eastern Silver Spring Communities Plan area! On Wednesday, June 3rd at 5:30pm, we’ll lead a family-paced bike ride through some of the neighborhoods in the plan—stopping by two of the plan’s official placemaking locations, and chatting in-person with planners to provide feedback on preliminary plan recommendations.

🏡 Homeowners: Have You Considered an Accessory Dwelling Unit?

Accessory Dwelling Units (“ADUs”) have become a hot topic nationally. In different locales ADUs go by different names—tiny homes, granny flats, casitas, basement apartments, and so on—but the idea is the same: a new, separate home on an existing property.
