ACTION ALERT: What do you think of the Duke Street recommendations?

The deadline to provide feedback on the draft recommendations for the Duke Street Land Use Plan has been extended to September 15. You can review the draft recommendations and share your input via the City’s engagement hub. The site has interactive maps of the corridor where you can offer location-specific comments, and a Q&A feature to drop questions.

What does CSG think?

We are pleased to see the components of the Draft Framework Plan we supported have been incorporated in these Working Draft Recommendations — namely the plan’s commitment to fostering a walkable and inclusive public realm by 1) expanding housing near transit stations, 2) enhancing pedestrian and bicycle networks, and 3) advancing affordability for both residents and small businesses.

However, while we still have the opportunity to offer feedback, we do have suggestions to make these recommendations even stronger. We hope the city will consider:

  • Adopting ‘Option B’ to convert the land use of the parcel west of South Quaker Lane from ‘Civic Services and Functions’ to ‘Residential/Commercial Medium,’ while preserving open civic space.
  • Allowing even more homes near the BRT stations that can accommodate them, particularly those near North and South Earley Street, Wheeler/Arell Court, and the northeast corner of Jordan and Duke Street.
  • Showing future pedestrian and bike links to adjacent areas outside the study boundary, including Eisenhower East and the neighborhood behind the Masonic Memorial.
  • Adding mid-block, east-west pedestrian connections for future redevelopments to improve walkability – specifically between North Ripley Street, North Paxton Street, and North Pickett Street, as well as between South Reynolds Street and South Van Dorn Street.
