The District has the opportunity to commit to a progressive future for the Chevy Chase Civic Core. However, despite the many benefits and extensive process, there are still vocal opponents.

What CSG is looking for:

  • Affordable housing that:
    • Is more affordable than the minimum requirements for income targeting;
    • Is managed by an experienced provider with a long track record in building and operating affordable housing; and providing services to assist low income tenants;
    • Provides larger affordable units for families — more 2 and 3 bedroom apartments.
    • Is not age restricted – currently two projects propose senior-only housing.
  • The establishment of an active Civic Core for the neighborhood that:
    • Is a welcoming civic space on Connecticut Avenue – offering a public plaza area for all generations and activity throughout the day, while providing shade, places to sit, and supporting local businesses.
    • Is centered on the library and is visible and accessible to emphasize the civic and public space, and is distinct from a private commercial use.
    • Complements the library with community center amenities and shared uses, and includes an indoor gym or court
    • Creates active outdoor recreation space that is accessible and visible – not hidden from public streets – for multigenerational use such as a playground and courts
  • A model of sustainable design, smart growth and quality public-private partnerships that:
    • Emphasizes life-cycle sustainability;
    • Achieves state-of-the-art green building, energy efficiency, and stormwater management
    • Represents an urban design strategy that prioritizes multi-modal best practices, and avoids surface parking, or exceeding minimum parking requirements;
    • Establishes an agreement with a reliable partner who has experience with implementing forward thinking mixed-use development.
