Over snacks, we talked about what the Zoning Commissioners will be looking for when you speak, and what you can say to best show your support for the zoning update. We’ll break into small groups and brainstorm what we can say.

On Saturday, September 28, over 50 participants took an early fall stroll through the Tenleytown commercial district with the Coalition for Smarter Growth and Ward3Vision to learn about the community’s past, present and future.
Tysons Corner: Up & Coming
Over 30 participants joined tour speakers Nick Perfili of Fairfax County DOT, Stella Koch of Audubon Naturalist Society, Jay Klug of The JBG Companies, and Bruce Wright of Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling to learn about redeveloping Tysons, the Silver Line, pedestrian and bicycle improvements, and the importance of stormwater management and stream restoration on Saturday, September 21, 2013.
ANC Smart Growth Summer Camp
At Smart Growth Summer Camp on August 21, 2013, Matthew Bell of the University of Maryland, School of Architecture and David Fields of Nelson\Nygaard discussed urban design, transportation, and the role ANC Commissioners can play in enacting positive change using smart growth principles. We brought together ANC Commissioners from across the city to meet, learn more, and share their stories.

A Walkable Wheaton?
On Saturday, June 1, 2013, the Coalition for Smarter Growth partnered with Wheaton Urban District Advisory Committee to tour recent and upcoming changes in “A Walkable Wheaton.” Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett and County Council President Nancy Navarro toured new developments and were joined by speakers from Kittelson & Associates, Housing Opportunities Commission, Latino Economic Development Center, and Just Up the Pike.
Living Laboratory: Sprawl & Stormwater on Rt. 1
Over 2 dozen people joined us to learn about Quander Brook and mixed-use development on this walking tour in Fairfax’s Route 1 corridor.
14th Street: Past, Present, and Future
The Greater U Street area of 14th Street NW has witnessed dramatic change in just a few short years. Over 1000 housing units are under construction or newly built, about 85,000 square feet of retail space have been added, and dozens of restaurants have opened in the past few years. What makes this historic district such a magnet for new development? How has historic preservation and the arts district coexisted with dramatic redevelopment all along the corridor? What’s being done to preserve and build affordable housing? We heard about the story of the rapidly changing 14th Street NW corridor from the people who live and work here.

White Flint is fundamentally transforming from an aging auto-oriented commercial corridor to an accessible and vibrant walkable community. On April 27, 2013, CSG brought together together Federal Realty’s Tommy Mann, Friends of White Flint’s Lindsay Hoffman, and Nkosi Yearwood, the Montgomery County lead planner for White Flint, to update us on progress, explore what’s changing and what it means for the neighborhood, and what we can expect in this area as it becomes one of the Washington region’s newest walkable communities.
